Mzembi is Africa’s man for UNWTO Secretary General says South Africa

Hard-working, passionate, and deeply committed” is how Minister Xasa described her Zimbabwean counterpart. I know he will bring these same qualities to the service of global tourism.”

— South Africa Minister of Tourism Ms. Thoko Xasa

PRETORIA, SOUTH AFRICA, April 30, 2017 /EINPresswire.com/ — “This is Africa’s time, and Walter Mzembi is Africa’s candidate to head the UN World Tourism Organization (UNWTO).”

With these words, South African Minister of Tourism Ms. Thoko Xasa, reinforced the South African government’s “strong and principled” support for Mzembi’s African Union (AU)-endorsed bid for election to the post of UNWTO Secretary General.

Ms. Xasa was delivering the keynote address at a gala dinner hosted yesterday evening by her ministry for the AU-endorsed candidate at the plush Sheraton hotel in downtown Pretoria, South Africa’s capital city.

Those invited to the dinner included Government Ministers, Ambassadors of all UNWTO Executive Council member states represented in South Africa, representatives of the South African tourism industry, and both local and foreign media houses.

Praising Dr. Mzembi for the strong leadership he has shown in formulating and driving Africa’s evolving tourism development strategies, and for seeking to institutionalize tourism as a stand-alone sector within African Union administrative structures, she expressed her own and Africa’s full confidence in his ability to provide equally effective leadership at the very apex of global tourism.

Retracing the selection processes at sub-regional and continental levels, by which Dr. Mzembi emerged, with the unanimous endorsement of all 15 SADC member countries and all 55 member states of the African Union, Minister Xasa noted that she had worked alongside Mzembi for many years and could personally attest to the caliber and integrity of Africa’s selected candidate for the UNWTO post.

“Hard-working, passionate, and deeply committed” is how Minister Xasa described her Zimbabwean counterpart. “I know he will bring these same qualities to the service of global tourism.”

Stressing again that “this is Africa’s time,” Minister Xasa appealed to African ambassadors present at the dinner for the continent to remain united and focused in its support for Dr. Mzembi, cautioning that “a divided Africa is a weaker Africa, open to exploitation and less able to resist the self-serving manipulations of others who would seek, themselves, to set Africa’s agenda.”

The minister noted that, notwithstanding its massive tourism potential and staggering natural-resource wealth, Africa’s share of global tourism arrivals and expenditures still hovered between 3 to 5 percent.

“Africa needs to work more closely together, as neighbors, as component parts of integrated regional structures, and as a continent of 55 nations, to ensure that African tourism grows and migrates towards more visible and more effective integration into global tourism flows.”

The minister said that although it was a global position he was seeking, Dr. Mzembi would strive to ensure that Africa’s tourism performance, along with that of other less well-performing regions, would be more fully accommodated into strategies to grow global tourism over the coming decade.

The election of a new Secretary General for the UNWTO takes place in Madrid, Spain, on May 12. The name of Secretary General-elect to emerge from that process will then be submitted by the Executive Council to a meeting of the UNWTO General Assembly, scheduled to convene in Chengdu, China, during the second week of September.

The new Secretary General will officially take office in early January 2018 with a mandate of 4 years, renewable once.

Should Dr. Mzembi succeed in his bid to head the UNWTO, it will be the first time in the 60-year history of the organization that an African has occupied the top office.

RI International’s Third Crisis Center to Open This Year

Staff and guests will not be separated by Plexiglas fish tank walls, and our engaging teams will focus on helping those we serve return to a life of meaning and purpose in their communities.”

— RI International CEO and President David Covington

RIVERSIDE, CALIFORNIA, U.S., April 28, 2017 /EINPresswire.com/ — RI International CEO and President David Covington announced today that the ribbon cutting for the Mental Health Urgent Care located at 9890 County Farm Road in Riverside, CA, will be held on May 3rd at 10 am.
.
“We are grateful to the Riverside Board of Supervisors, the Riverside University System -Behavioral Health and the Riverside County Economic Development Agency for making this beautiful mental health facility possible. RI International’s aim is to ensure that every crisis facility we manage is inviting — resembling an upscale home rather than an institution – and serves as a healing space. In this facility, staff and guests will not be separated by Plexiglas fish tank walls, and our engaging teams will focus on helping every person we serve return to a life of meaning and purpose in their communities.”

According to Covington, the mental health urgent care will provide 24/7/365 care including; around-the-clock assessment, psychiatric support, medication management and customized services to adults voluntarily seeking assistance for a mental health crisis. Guests may enter the urgent care at any time of the day or night, or may be referred to the walk-in center by mobile crisis teams or law enforcement for crisis and assessment services. All visits and stays are voluntary, and cannot exceed 24 hours. During their stay, individuals participate in developing their own care plan including options for recovery education, peer-to-peer support, mental health services, nutritional counseling, coordination and referrals to community-based services.

Covington said RI International is operating the center under a contract with Riverside University Health System.

Steve Steinberg, the director of RUHS Behavioral Health, said the center will help relieve pressure on local emergency departments that get overwhelmed by individuals brought in by law enforcement on involuntary psychiatric admissions known as a 5150.

“Our goal is to provide a positive alternative to requiring involuntarily holds in hospital emergency rooms,” Steinberg said. Through this mental health urgent care, we’re able to help de-escalate situations and help individuals move more quickly toward recovery.”

Crowd-sourced reporting provides transit agencies a valuable tool in protecting against terrorism

“ELERTS understands the need for crowd-sourced incident reporting. The police can't do it alone. Twenty-first century policing requires the community’s participation in public safety.”

— says Ed English, ELERTS CEO.

WEYMOUTH, MA, USA, April 28, 2017 /EINPresswire.com/ — The reality of today’s threat levels forces transit agencies to develop strategies concerning terrorism. The very nature of public transit systems—their open design, multiple access points and heavy volume of passengers—makes them hard to defend.

The string of recent terrorist plots, including the latest out of Russia, validates the need to assess how transit agencies are protecting themselves, including through utilizing a new source of valuable information: crowd-sourced reporting. Smartphones are everywhere; incoming information from smartphones makes a critical difference to responding personnel. The utilization of crowd-sourced reporting is an innovative approach to 21st-century transit policing.

“ELERTS understands the need for crowd-sourced incident reporting. The police can't do it alone. Twenty-first century policing requires the community’s participation in public safety. There is no better sensor for security threats than an eyewitness who sees or overhears a threat,” says Ed English, ELERTS CEO. “Transit agencies of all sizes are using ELERTS’ See Say communication platform to enhance safety.”

ANNABELLE BOYD and JOHN P.SULLIVAN Boyd, Virginia Synthesis of Transit Practice 27 Emergency Preparedness for Transit Terrorism
The changing nature of terrorism presents new challenges for U.S. public transportation agencies. A primary mission of each transit agency is to ensure, to the fullest extent possible, the security of passengers, employees, and agency property. Each year, U.S. public transportation agencies carry more than 8 billion passengers and employ almost 300,000 people. The U.S. mass transit infrastructure is currently valued at more than $1 trillion.

Brian Michael Jenkins (February, 2017) THE CHALLENGE OF PROTECTING TRANSIT AND PASSENGER RAIL
Public surface transportation poses unique challenges. It is not easy to increase security without causing inconvenience, unreasonably slowing travel times, adding significant costs, and creating vulnerable queues of people waiting to pass through security checkpoints. This has compelled rail operators to explore other options: enlisting passengers and staff in alerting authorities to suspicious objects or behavior, random passenger screening, designing new stations to facilitate surveillance and reduce potential casualties from explosions or fire, and ensuring rapid intervention.

Countering Terrorism in Transportation by Mortimer L. Downey, Thomas R. Menzies
Successful transportation counterterrorism, however, will require a new strategy. There is no point in trying to protect against or weed out every possible opening for terrorists. That is a traditional approach to transportation security, but it is expensive and demonstrably ineffective. The new strategy should rely instead on layering and interleaving various defensive measures. A layering strategy will not only protect against vulnerabilities in transportation security, it will also deter terrorists by creating uncertainties about the chances of being caught.

Threats: A Guide JOHN N. BALOG McCormick, MATTHEW G. DEVOST and JOHN P. SULLIVAN
Rapid and accurate information sharing is a critical operational need for coping with threats against public transportation systems. Emergencies arising from terrorist threats highlight the need for transportation managers to minimize the vulnerability of passengers, employees, and physical assets through incident prevention, preparedness, response, and recovery. Managers are seeking to reduce the chances that transportation vehicles and facilities will be targets or instruments of terrorist attacks and to be prepared to respond to and recover from such possibilities.

Brian Michael Jenkins (February, 2017) The Challenge of Protecting Transit and Passenger Rail (Mineta Transportation Institute at San Jose State University)
Enlisting the public in security demonstrably works. One security measure that can be quantified and that appears to work in the area of surface-transportation security is enlisting staff and the public to call attention to suspicious behavior and objects. Public awareness in the United Kingdom seems to have helped in identifying explosive devices placed by the IRA. According to the MTI database, warnings by staff, on-scene security personnel, and passengers prevented 11 percent of terrorist bombings in Europe.

Brian Michael Jenkins and Bruce Butterworth (24 Mar, 2014) Says Subways Are Still in Terrorists' Sights (Mineta Transportation Institute at San Jose State University)
Meanwhile, keeping both passengers and employees alert is key. "See Something, Say Something" may sound trite and tired in the rapid transit system, but it can work. In the 3,754 attacks recorded against train, bus and other targets, there are indications that in somewhat less than 400, someone interrupted the attack. Sometimes the narratives do not specify who took the initial action (in about 170 cases). In other cases, they were interrupted by police, military, intelligence agencies, or anonymous tips. Without these interventions, the collective death toll could have been much worse.

ELERTS’ See Say™ mobile phone app was developed for transit agencies to enable the crowd-sourcing of safety and security concerns from riders. When riders see a potentially threatening situation, with the click of a button, they can: 1) directly call the police or 2) discretely submit a report with a photo, video, incident description and GPS coordinates. The camera flash is disabled to avoid drawing attention to the rider. Riders may also choose to submit a report anonymously.

“Crowd-sourced reporting of security incidents works. Riders see suspicious activity before it evolves into an incident,” says Ed English. “Getting actionable information to police immediately from eyewitnesses can enhance their response [times].”

Due to the participation of vigilant riders, the ELERTS mobile app converts crowd-sourced knowledge into situation awareness for the transit agency. Once a report is initiated, two-way communication is enabled. The dispatcher can ask the rider for more details about the situation or provide instructions as needed. The app allows riders to report incidents such as suspicious activity, disruptive behavior, crimes in progress and security and safety issues. Riders may also report immediately threatening situations such as assaults and attacks on drivers.

About ELERTS: ELERTS Corporation, headquartered in Weymouth, MA, develops best-in-class emergency communication software empowered by community-sourced reporting of safety and security concerns. The company’s cloud-based approach leverages smartphone technologies to provide robust, bidirectional communication between multiple parties. ELERTS mobile technology integrates video surveillance, access control and mass-notification systems. The result is actionable information for emergency situations that help first responders become faster responders.

— Chirajit Paul, Author of Fragrance of Rose

NEW DELHI, INDIA, April 28, 2017 /EINPresswire.com/ — • The novel is inspired by real life instances and deals with ordeals of women sexually harassed at workplace
• Novel ranks #30 in ‘Indian Writing’ category of leading online bookseller Amazon
• All profits from the book pledged towards support of NGO’s fighting the cause

April 28th, 2017: Renowned author Chirajit Paul launched his second novel, ‘The Fragrance of Rose’, which is now creating ripples across online marketplaces and offline stores. The book is published by India’s leading publishing house, Srishti Publishers. The book was released by eminent Bengali author Ranjan Bandyopadhyay and leading Bengali film actress Ridhima Ghosh in a formal event held in the author’s hometown of India

Chirajit’s novel ‘The Fragrance of Rose’ deals with the very critical issue of workplace sexual harassment and is inspired by a few real life incidents that the author has come across in his life. A key part of the launch event was the panel discussion on ‘Perils of Sexual Harassment at Workplace’ which saw the guests representing various industries that included film, corporate, education etc. give their perspective on the topic.

Chirajit Paul, who is a Chartered Accountant by training and an Enterprise Application Specialist by profession had actively researched on the topic before starting to write. Speaking on the occasion he said “Harassment at workplace is a major concern for a developing country like India. Our culture and society is heavily male dominated and the women’s voice is usually suppressed. While doing some basic research on the subject I found some startling figures” he said.

A study done on a sample size of 500 in India found that:
• 54% (272) had experienced some form of workplace sexual harassment.
• 27% of the 272 respondents experienced harassment by their colleague, while 17% were harassed by their superior.
• 12% had received threats of termination if they did not comply with the requests of the sexual harassers

“The novel is a sincere effort to highlight the challenges faced by women who aspire to make it big in life. Though the characters in the novel are fictitious, the story is based on real life incidents that I have experienced and heard of from family and friends. I chose the medium of creative writing so that the alarming message could be conveyed in a way that is interesting, subtle but yet impactful. The novel will get readers thinking hard on the topic and hopefully help in fighting the cause too. This is my contribution in fighting this evil” he added.

The author has also pledged all the profits from this book towards organizations fighting against sexual harassment at workplaces. “We always think what is that we can do to fight this plague. While I feel that writing this novel was my first step against fighting workplace harassment, I hope this serves as a platform for readers to do their bit for the cause too. With every book bought online or offline, the profits will directly go for fighting the cause. I urge readers to take full benefit of this opportunity and help in supporting the cause.” Chirajit added.

Mr. Arup Bose, Publisher at Srishti Publishers, said “At a time when we are hearing increasing voices being raised against Sexual Harassment in and outside the workplace, The Fragrance of Rose hits the right note. This is a topic which needs to be talked about more prominently and is the need of the hour. The strong female protagonist and how she breaks stereotypes to make a place for herself will make for an inspiring read”

Living My Illusion – A new ground breaking documentary, unravelling the virus that is silently killing your relationship.

50% of all marriages end in divorce. Separation is an emotionally difficult event, but many people are wondering, is it possible to have a healthy breakup?

Living My Illusion (NYSE:LMI)

The Living My Illusion documentary series was co-created as an educational tool so that true love can prevail over fear, emotional desperation, and ego elation.”

— Tony Jeton Selimi

NEW YORK, NEW YORK, UNITED STATES, April 25, 2017 /EINPresswire.com/ — Fear of unworthiness, not honouring our inner knowing, or communicating our truth is the “wake-up call” of living in an illusion.

Healthy marriages are good for couples, their children, society and well-being. Yet 30% to 60% of married individuals will engage in infidelity and 40% to 50% will divorce. This creates a ripple effect that impact's physical, mental, and emotional wellbeing. Like a virus, it spreads into other areas of life, creating a financial black hole that may take years to overcome.

Having experienced the icy touch of “midlife crisis”, Joel Van der Molen sought the help of Tony Jeton Selimi, #1 Amazon bestselling author, spiritual teacher, and healer to understand the root cause of the pain and suffering he was not consciously aware of. Little did he know what the outcome would produce, let alone the path it would create which he is currently on, overcoming the fear of judgement, failure, and success.

This heart-wrenching documentary looks at the 360-degree impact of remaining in an unhealthy marriage and what people can do to either strengthen their relationship or divorce with “Love”.

National Suicide Prevention Leaders Tackle Ted Style Talks

American Association of Suicidology 50th Anniversary Conference

Suicide Prevention Expert Ted Talks

“Voice of the Ravens” Football Announcer and Media Coach Gerry Sandusky Turns Clinicians into Connectors

Just saying the word suicide demands the attention of an audience. This subject matter is of utmost importance, which is all the more reason we must deliver clear and concise messages.”

— David Covington

PHOENIX, AZ, U.S., April 25, 2017 /EINPresswire.com/ — Five national leaders will present Ted-style talks on suicide prevention subjects at the 50th anniversary conference for the American Association of Suicidology (AAS)held in Phoenix, AZ, on April 26 – 28th. According to football announcer and Ted-talk trainer, Gerry Sandusky, these clinicians will not be sharing run-of-the-mill “beige” presentations.

“Just saying the word suicide demands the attention of an audience,” said AAS President Elect and RI International CEO and President David Covington. “This subject matter is of utmost importance and has a gravity to it, which is all the more reason we must deliver clear and concise messages, especially when speaking to an audience of 1,500 prevention experts.”

Speakers (in order as pictured) include David Jobes, Ph.D., ABPP, Professor of Psychology and Associate Director of Clinical Training for The Catholic University of America, whose talk, Growing up in AAS, is about the development of a career suicidologist with experience spanning three decades in the field.
Suicide loss survivor– and attempt survivor–Bart Andrews, PhD, licensed psychologist and Vice President of Clinical Practice for Behavioral Health Response, focuses on understanding life after loss in his talk, A World without Us.

John Draper, Ph.D., Chief Clinical Officer, Mental Health Association of NYC, National Suicide Prevention Lifeline and National Networks leader, speaks to the need for connecting people to their reasons for living, with his Should Meaning Mean More in Suicide Prevention Ted-style Talk.

Cheryl A. King, Ph.D., University of Michigan Professor and Mary A. Rackham Institute executive will deliver, The Challenge to Recognize Suicide Risk among Teenage Males.

Finally, Covington, MBA, LPC, talks about contagiousness in his talk, Spreading Fear: The Story of Ebola and What it Means for Suicide Prevention.

Covington, who has spoken in a dozen countries, connected a few years ago with Sandusky to polish his 15-minute presentations that he has since delivered across the U.S., U.K., Australia and Japan. When he became president elect for AAS, he asked Sandusky to help prepare his fellow presenters. “The genius of a Ted Style Talk is its length, 18 minutes or less. It gives the presenter enough time to craft his or her ideas in a compelling fashion without taxing the attention span of the audience. The time limitation puts increased pressure on the speaker to hone his or her message, but still gives enough room to fully explain complicated ideas and the connection between ideas and events,” said Sandusky.

About AAS: Founded in 1968 by Edwin S. Shneidman, PhD, AAS promotes research, public awareness programs, public education and training for professionals and volunteers. The membership of AAS includes mental health and public health professionals, researchers, suicide prevention and crisis intervention centers, school districts, crisis center volunteers, survivors of suicide loss, attempt survivors, and a variety of lay persons who have in interest in suicide prevention. UNWTO candidate Dho receives powerful endorsement on Earth Day

Director of The Earth Institute at Columbia University Jeffrey Sachs endorses Ambassador Dho Young-shim for UNWTO Campaign

Ambassador Dho is a remarkable person: full of energy, drive, and tremendous organizational and leadership capacity.”

— Professor Jeffrey David Sachs, Columbia University

NEW YORK, NEW YORK, USA, April 25, 2017 /EINPresswire.com/ — The Earth Day event was celebrated in 192 countries around the globe. Professor Jeffrey David Sachs is an American economist and director of The Earth Institute at Columbia University, where he holds the title of University Professor, the highest rank Columbia bestows on its faculty. He is known as one of the world's leading experts on economic development and the fight against poverty.

He is a special adviser to the former United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon on the Millennium Development Goals, having held the same position under former UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan. He is co-founder and chief strategist of Millennium Promise Alliance, a nonprofit organization dedicated to ending extreme poverty and hunger.

Ambassador Dho Young-shim is the Chairperson of the UN World Tourism Organization’s Sustainable Tourism for Eliminating Poverty (ST-EP) Foundation (Republic of Korea)

Ambassador Dho promotes tourism, sports, and education to fight poverty in the world’s least developed countries. She is spearheading the Thank You Small Library project of the UNWTO ST-EP Foundation which has established over 80 libraries in developing countries since October 2007.

Ms. Dho is a candidate to become the next Secretary-General of the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO).

Today Professor Jeffrey David Sachs issued an open letter of endorsement to support the campaign for Ambassador at UNWTO.

The open letter reads:

To All Concerned:

I am absolutely delighted to learn that Ambassador Dho Young-Shim is a candidate to lead the UN World Tourism Organization (UNWTO). Under the very able leadership of Secretary-General Dr. Taleb Rifai, the UNWTO has positioned itself and the tourism industry as a strong and creative supporter of Agenda 2030 and the Sustainable Development Goals. From my detailed and longstanding engagement with Ambassador Dho I have no doubt that she would continue to lead the UNWTO will great energy, dedication, decency, and commitment to the global agenda of sustainable development and peace.

In my capacity as a senior UN advisor and as a development scholar and practitioner at Columbia University, I have closely worked with Ambassador Dho for more than a decade, for both the Millennium Development Goals and the Sustainable Development Goals. Ambassador Dho is a remarkable person: full of energy, drive, and tremendous organizational and leadership capacity.

She gets things done. She insists that others get things done. And she always acts for the greater good. She has served as a member of many high-level groups in support of the UN agenda and the UN leadership, currently including her active role as a member of the SDG Advocates appointed by the UN Secretary-General, in which I too am a member.

Ambassador Dho knows the challenges facing Africa and the developing world more generally.

She also knows well and on a first-hand basis the successes that Korea has achieved during the past half century in economic development and quality education, and has worked fervently and diligently to extend the lessons of Korea’s successes to the rest of the world. And she knows the myriad ways that tourism can serve not only the wellbeing and safety of tourists and workers in the tourist sector, but of humanity more generally, in extending good will, creating quality jobs, and breaking down barriers between peoples.

I am fully confident that Ambassador Dho would be an outstanding Secretary General of UNWTO.

With all best wishes,
Jeffrey D. Sachs
