The Rev. Jay Lawlor continues his series on America's Goals with Goal 5, Equal Opportunity for All, and people of faith working to build the Beloved Community.
INDIANAPOLIS, IN, US, March 12, 2018 /EINPresswire.com/ — The Rev. Jay Lawlor continues his series on America's Goals for 2030. In his fifth installment he discusses Goal 5: Equal Opportunity for All. Following is the Rev. Lawlor's article.
America is a diverse society, and it works best when everybody who works hard can achieve their own vision and dreams. We trust each other – and our nation – when we feel that we are getting a fair shake. Ensuring that everyone gets a fair chance at success is a basic American value and an important building block for a stronger country. (Source: America’s Goals)
5. Equal Opportunity for All
5.a Equal pay for equal work regardless of gender or race
5.b End mass incarceration
5.c Freedom from ethnic and racial profiling for everyone
Racism is sin. Oppression of anyone based on gender is sin. Jesus stood on the side of those who are oppressed and against the people, organizations, and institutions of that oppression. Christians must do the same. We must challenge hate with love, violence with peace, and oppression with equality. But we must act boldly in standing up against evil.
This is not an issue of party or politics. This is a moral issue. Jesus leads us in the way of love, justice, compassion, and equality for ALL.
The Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. spoke of building the Beloved Community. Archbishop Desmond Tutu speaks of the Rainbow People of God. We must work to build that Beloved Community which includes every person of the Rainbow.
The Baptismal Covenant calls all those baptized in the Episcopal Church to strive for justice and peace among all people, and respect the dignity of every human being. All Christians are called to faithfully follow Jesus. You can either follow Jesus or you can follow white supremacy and Nazism. You can’t follow both. There is no moral equivalence.
O God, you made us in your own image and redeemed us
through Jesus your Son: Look with compassion on the whole
human family; take away the arrogance and hatred which
infect our hearts; break down the walls that separate us;
unite us in bonds of love; and work through our struggle and
confusion to accomplish your purposes on earth; that, in
your good time, all nations and races may serve you in
harmony around your heavenly throne; through Jesus Christ
our Lord. Amen. – Prayer for the Human Family, Book of Common Prayer (BCP) p. 815
