Georgia Climbs National Rankings For Percentage of Women Legislators; Continues Lead in the South

According to newly-released information from Center for American Women in Politics, Georgia now ranks 19th in the country for percentage of women serving in state legislatures.

After the 2018 election, Democratic women now outnumber GOP women in the Georgia General Assembly by 3.3 to one.

Georgia’s percentage of women serving in the state legislature exceeds both the percentage of women serving in Congress (23.7 percent) and the average percentage of women serving in state legislatures nationwide (28.6 percent).

Moving up four spots, Georgia is now ranked 19th in the nation for the percentage of women serving in state legislatures – the highest Georgia has ever ranked!

We’re very proud to say the percentage of women in Georgia’s General Assembly is higher than both the national average and the percentage of women in Congress, both now at historic highs.”

— Anna Beck, chair of the Georgia’s WIN List Board

ATLANTA, GEORGIA, UNITED STATES, January 9, 2019 /EINPresswire.com/ — Georgia continues to lead the South for the highest percentage of women in its General Assembly, rising four spots to rank 19th in the nation.

When the General Assembly convenes on Monday, January 14th, women will comprise 30.9 percent of the 236-member Georgia General Assembly. This percentage exceeds both the percentage of women serving in Congress (23.7 percent) and the average percentage of women serving in state legislatures nationwide (28.6 percent), reports Georgia’s WIN List, the state’s only Political Action Committee (PAC) devoted to helping elect Democratic women to statewide office and legislative seats.

As a state, Georgia’s General Assembly continues to lead ALL Southern states both for the percentage of legislators who are women and for the percentage of those women who are Democrats, based on figures annually compiled by the Center for American Women in Politics at Rutgers University. In 2018, Georgia ranked 23rd in the nation and the percentage of women legislators was 26.7.

For 2019, there are a total of 15 women in the 56-member Georgia Senate – 13 of them Democrats. In the 180-member House, there are 58 women: 43 Democrats and 15 Republicans. All together, Democratic women will outnumber their Republican colleagues more than three to one. When compared to 2018, Democrats have increased the number of women in the Senate by two and in the House by 11. Comparatively, three House Republicans lost to Democratic challengers in 2018.

“We were thrilled to endorse and elect a record-setting number of women in 2018,” said Anna Beck, chair of the Georgia’s WIN List Board. “We’re very proud to say the percentage of women in Georgia’s General Assembly is higher than both the national average and the percentage of women in Congress, both now at historic highs.”

“For 18 years, WIN List has worked to recruit, train, endorse and elect women. During 2018, we awarded more than $125,000 in candidate endorsement checks and independent expenditures. We are happy to see our efforts pay off in such a powerful way and look forward to the day when the first Georgia women will serve as Governor, Lt. Governor and in other state constitutional offices.”

As an indication of progress, when Georgia’s WIN List was founded in 2000, the state ranked 31st nationally and women held less than 20 percent of legislative seats.

AMCD Supports President Trump’s Stance on Syria

US forces in Syria (photo: AFP)

WASHINGTON, DC, USA, January 9, 2019 /EINPresswire.com/ — The American Mideast Coalition for Democracy supports the President’s planned withdrawal from Syria after ISIS has been completely decimated and the Kurds are reasonably protected. AMCD also supports the consolidation of a Kurdish-minorities autonomous region in Northeast Syria as exists in Iraq.

“Even though this may not be the outcome the Kurds ultimately wanted, it may result in a stable situation which will allow many refugees to return to their homes,” said AMCD co-chair Tom Harb. “The Kurds have proven to be reliable allies and President Trump wants to leave them in a safe and stable condition.”

The Sunni areas of Syria also need protection from the Iran-backed Shi’a militias which are now seeking to consolidate power in a continuous land bridge from Iran, though Iraq, Syria and into Lebanon where the Iranian proxy Hezbollah is ascendant. In this regard, there are European forces already deployed in Syria and these, coupled with a possible deployment of forces from Egypt and the UAE, could frustrate Iran’s plans, stabilize those areas and destroy the remnants of ISIS at the same time.

“In other words, we need a final allied surge to destroy ISIS once and for all,” said AMCD advisor and FOX news analyst, Dr. Walid Phares. “Ideally an Arab force comprised of troops from the UAE and Egypt along with some European forces should be able to block Iranian ambitions as well as shielding the Sunni, Christian and Yazidi populations from the depredations of the Shi’a militias allied with Iran. Once these areas are stable, Europe can begin returning refugees and rebuilding destroyed areas with the help of promised funds from Saudi Arabia.”

AMCD supports President Trump’s insistence that the Arab world take care of their own neighborhood and that the stabilization and rebuilding of Syria be shouldered by those with a vested interest there.

New Animated Video Explains “What It’s Like To Live With A Brain Injury”

New video from De Caro & Kaplen, LLP sets out to reveal what it’s like to live with a TBI.

We believe that ‘The Invisible Rain Cloud’ accurately conveys the experiences and emotions of many brain injury survivors, and early feedback from the community has been overwhelmingly positive.”

— Michael Kaplen

PLEASANTVILLE, NEW YORK, USA, January 9, 2019 /EINPresswire.com/ — Recent CDC figures reveal 5.3 million Americans currently live with a Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) related disability, while millions more visit the emergency room each year reporting brain injuries including concussions. With statistics demonstrating that brain injuries have now reached “epidemic levels” in the USA, New York Brain injury attorneys De Caro & Kaplen, LLP have released an animated video revealing what it’s like to live with a TBI.

Shana De Caro, a senior partner in the firm, explains why they created the video:

“Traumatic brain injury is often called ‘The Invisible Injury’ as symptoms may not be apparent to an observer. And for those suffering from a TBI it can be difficult to explain how they feel. While every TBI is different, and everyone experiences their injury in a unique way, our video attempts to explain some of the common symptoms and feelings an individual may confront after brain injury.”

The video, which can be viewed on the firm’s website and YouTube channel, is titled ‘The Invisible Rain Cloud’. A conversation with a former client provided the inspiration for the project.

“I had been speaking with a former client, who described living with traumatic brain injury as ‘dragging around a personal rock’. “I thought it was a great analogy, and it stayed with me. Others find it difficult to comprehend, so I started thinking about how to explain what it’s like from the perspective of someone with a brain injury”, explained Shana.

Shana, who was recently re-elected for a second consecutive term as secretary of the Brain Injury Association of America, continued, “I decided to reach out to the TBI community for further feedback. While describing their symptoms, several individuals mentioned a fog in their head that was invisible. We decided to call this fog an ‘invisible rain cloud’, and in our video, the cloud haunts the protagonist, illustrating the symptoms and experiences of life with traumatic brain injury.”

Michael V. Kaplen, a partner in the firm, who chairs the New York State Traumatic Brain Injury Services Coordinating Council and is a former President of the Brain Injury Association of New York, believes that the video will help people with a brain injury to explain many of their hidden scars and difficulties, and assist family and friends understand the frustrations survivors face in their daily lives.

“We believe that ‘The Invisible Rain Cloud’ accurately conveys the experiences and emotions of many brain injury survivors, and early feedback from the community has been overwhelmingly positive. But, our video makes it clear that every brain injury is different. While we are confident that a large number of individuals with TBI will identify with the symptoms we describe and the analogies we use, a brain injury is incredibly complex and others may experience their injury in a different way. ” says Kaplen.

Kaplen highlights the extraordinary CDC figures of the prevalence of TBI-related disabilities as evidence that more needs to be done to help individuals who have suffered a traumatic brain injury. “Brain injuries must be regarded as a public health crisis in the US, and advocacy, education, and resources must be devoted to this devastating condition. A traumatic brain injury is a life changing event which impacts the daily lives over 5 million Americans and their families.”

Michael concludes, “The injury may be invisible, but the devastating ramifications have a significant, life-long impact. We hope that ‘The Invisible Rain Cloud’ will help propel TBI into the political and public consciousness.”

Parents are not being told the dangers associated with psychiatric drugs and as a result they may too easily give permission for a prescription and regret it much later.”

— Diane Stein, President CCHR Florida

CLEARWATER, FL, US, January 9, 2019 /EINPresswire.com/ — Alarmed at the significant number of children prescribed psychiatric drugs, the Citizens Commission on Human Rights (CCHR), a non-profit mental health watchdog dedicated to the protection of children, regularly hosts seminars for parents on psychostimulants, the dangerous side effects associated with these drugs and the potential for drug addiction.

Today in the United States approximately 7.2 million children between the ages of 0 to 17 are using prescription psychiatric drugs, and almost half of them are on drugs due to being labeled with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). This labeling represents a billing code that has come under increasing criticism for diagnosing normal childhood behavior as a “mental disorder”.

The psychostimulant, methylphenidate, also known as Ritalin, is one of the drugs prescribed to children who have been labeled as ADHD and comes with such side effects as nervousness, agitation, anxiety as well as psychosis. [1] Methylphenidate is a Schedule II drug, which means the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) classifies it as having a high potential for abuse. At the same time, the DEA warns that methylphenidate produces many of the same effects as cocaine and that psychotic episodes and severe psychological addiction have all been associated with methylphenidate use. [2]

“Parents are not being told the dangers associated with these drugs,” said Diane Stein, President CCHR Florida. “Lacking information, they may too easily give permission for a prescription and regret it much later.”

As part of a campaign to educate parents on psychiatric drug dangers, CCHR hosts an informational seminar delivered by Jason Good, the public executive of a successful drug rehabilitation center. Mr. Good, speaks of his personal experience being labeled with ADHD as a child, which began with a prescription for Ritalin and ended with illegal street drug use and narcotics addiction at the age of 15. To learn more or to reserve seats at the next seminar please call 727-442-8820.

About CCHR: Initially established by the Church of Scientology and renowned psychiatrist Dr. Thomas Szasz in 1969, CCHR’s mission is to eradicate abuses committed under the guise of mental health and enact patient and consumer protections. L. Ron Hubbard, founder of Scientology, first brought psychiatric imprisonment to wide public notice: “Thousands and thousands are seized without process of law, every week, over the ‘free world’ tortured, castrated, killed. All in the name of ‘mental health,’” he wrote in March 1969. For more information visit www.cchrflorida.org

The generation of Holocaust survivors is almost gone and Holocaust denial is on the rise. Even in humanity’s darkest hour, you can still be human. The time to watch this important film is now.”

— Co-director Ric Bienstock & Co-producer Simcha Jacobovici.

TORONTO, CANADA, January 8, 2019 /EINPresswire.com/ — Multi-award winning film makers Simcha Jacobovici and Ric Bienstock to present the Canadian Premiere Screening of Associated Producers’ (AP) latest documentary, The Good Nazi. It’s a film with an unexpected hero – a Nazi major. The Screening is on Saturday, January 19th at 7:30pm at Beth Avraham Yoseph of Toronto Congregation, 613 Clark Avenue West, Thornhill, Ontario, L4J 5V3. Tickets are available to the public: https://www.bayt.ca/event/the-good-nazi.html.

The Good Nazi tells the story of Major Karl Plagge, a Schindler-type German who, during the Second World War, saved hundreds of Jews in Lithuania. He accomplished this by creating a “forced labor camp” called “HKP” so as to protect Jewish men, women and children from the murderous SS.

HKP is the only Holocaust site in Europe that has not been destroyed or turned into a museum. It’s now slated for demolition, to make way for urban renewal. Before that happens a team of American and Canadian scientists converge on the place. They use ground-penetrating radar (GPR) in order to identify the mass grave of the Jews that were murdered by the SS and the secret hiding places – in the walls and in the ground – of the Jews who were saved by Plagge. A survivor, who hid in one of those secret spaces as a child, joins the scientists. Shot on location at HKP, The Good Nazi weaves the stories of Major Karl Plagge, the scientists and the survivors.

Co-director Ric Bienstock says: “The generation of Holocaust survivors is almost gone and Holocaust denial is on the rise. The time to watch this important film is now.”

Co-producer Simcha Jacobovici says: “The film demonstrates that even in humanity’s darkest hour, you can still be human – by doing the right thing.”

The Good Nazi was produced in Canada for VisionTV by Toronto-based Associated Producers (AP). AP is one of the world’s leading producers of non-scripted films. AP has garnered over 100 international awards for its documentaries, including a DuPont Award from Columbia University School of Journalism, two Alfred R. Murrow Awards from the American Overseas Press Club, three US Emmys for “Investigative Journalism” and two Donald Brittain Awards from the Academy of Canadian Cinema & Television. Both Ric Bienstock and Simcha Jacobovici have been honored with Canada’s highest recognition in broadcast journalism, the “Gordon Sinclair Award”. The Good Nazi is co-produced by Felix Golubev and co-directed by Yaron Niski.

ITALIAN AMERICAN ONE VOICE COALITION LAUNCHES GOFUNDME PAGE TO HELP SAVE COLUMBUS DAY AND MONUMENTS

ONE VOICE Defends Columbus Day

“Elected Officials across the country are violating our civil rights and this legislation of hate must be stopped,” according to ONE VOICE officials.

BLOOMFIELD, NEW JERSEY, US, January 7, 2019 /EINPresswire.com/ — ITALIAN AMERICAN ONE VOICE COALITION LAUNCHES GOFUNDME PAGE TO HELP SAVE COLUMBUS DAY AND MONUMENTS

“Elected Officials across the country are violating our civil rights and this legislation of hate must be stopped,” according to ONE VOICE officials.

Bloomfield, NJ – The Italian American ONE VOICE Coalition (“ONE VOICE”), America’s largest independent Italian American anti-bias organization, is raising funds on GoFundMe to challenge local officials that seek to rename Columbus Day or remove monuments. This comes after several localities including NYC have initiated public debate over whether to keep or remove statues of Christopher Columbus and the holiday.

In 2018, many school committees and localities held meetings and voted to rename Columbus Day to Indigenous Peoples Day. This created heated school board discussions and public debate that infuriated Italian Americans within these areas. Critics of Columbus Day say it represents slavery and oppression. However, supporters of Columbus Day, which includes millions of Italian Americans, feel the holiday celebrates a great explorer, 500 years of immigration to America and Italian heritage.

“2018 was the year that anti-italianism returned and we must resist the hatred,” stated Dr. Manny Alfano, President of ONE VOICE. “This is why it is so important for Italian Americans and supporters to contribute to our GoFundMe page. Our civil rights are under attack and the money will be used for legal defense and other areas of protest.” ONE VOICE has been an outspoken advocate of the Italian American community, and its members gave testimony in last year’s monument commission hearings held in the five boroughs of NYC.

Columbus Day became a federal holiday in 1937 with many states and localities choosing to celebrate the holiday soon after. The monuments of Columbus were erected after the great wave of Italian immigrants began arriving in America in the early 20th century. Unfortunately, many of these monuments have been vandalized in the last few years leaving Italian American community leaders up in arms over the lack of criminal prosecution.

ONE VOICE is different from all other Italian American groups in that its sole focus and objective is to educate and fight bias, stereotyping and discrimination against Italian Americans. ONE VOICE’s stated mission is to “…secure the rightful representation of Americans of Italian origin and of all peoples whose paths toward social equality have been impeded. The powers of intellect, wisdom and due process of law will be brought to bear on all inequities.”

ONE VOICE issues a regular email newsletter, “The Alfano Digest,” to more than 5,000 individuals and Italian American organizations nationwide. Written and compiled by Dr. Manny Alfano, Founder and President of ONE VOICE, the Digest issues alerts on instances of bias, stereotyping, discrimination and defamation and activates the ONE VOICE nationwide network of “Defenders” who respond through calls, emails, faxes, letters and demonstrations where necessary. The Digest also contains informative Italian American cultural and heritage information. To receive the Digest, email Dr. Alfano – mannyalfano@comcast.net.
