WASHINGTON, DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA, UNITED STATES, February 28, 2019 /EINPresswire.com/ — A historic number of Americans–including a delegation from Youth for Human Rights International—showed their support for the peace and global engagement at the United Nations Association of the United States of America's (UNA-USA) annual Global Engagement Summit at UN Headquarters in New York City in February, 2019. The Summit was opened by United Nations Secretary-General, H.E. Mr. António Guterres. With more than 1,800 global activists in attendance, the Global Engagement Summit was one of the largest assemblies of Americans gathered in support of the UN goals.

The convening took place at a pivotal moment for the world and for the U.S.-UN relationship. The planet is facing the worst humanitarian and refugee crisis since World War II. Human rights violations, human trafficking, terrorism, and threats from the effects of climate change are a concern for the global community.

“There are many human rights issues that must be addressed within the United States and around the world such a human trafficking, education and addressing discrimination in all its forms, “said Erica Rodgers, National Director of Youth for Human Rights International who attended the summit. “In order to address these problems I feel we must make further efforts to encourage schools and institutions everywhere to better educate citizens on the rights listed in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the UN’s functions to promote peace. An increased understanding of basic human rights would assist in addressing these issues as a whole.”

While political leaders may be in disaccord, research shows that American voters registered in both major parties agree that sustained U.S. leadership at the UN is vital. A nationwide poll released last month by the Better World Campaign stated that 83% of Americans believe it is better for the U.S. to work with allies and international organizations than going it alone. This sentiment was furthered by U.S. Representative Eliot Engel (D-NY) when he addressed the group at the Summit and said, “Even as the most powerful country in the world, we can accomplish a great deal more when we partner with other countries rather than go it alone.”

Ms. Rodgers, after attending the Summit said, “The protection of human rights was fundamental in the founding of the United States over 200 years ago. The promotion of human rights is an important national interest to the United States. One duty of the U.S. Department of State is to ‘Hold governments accountable to their obligations under universal human rights norms and international human rights instruments’ and to ‘Promote greater respect for human rights, including freedom from torture, freedom of expression, press freedom, women's rights, children's rights, and the protection of minorities.’ This is why the U.S. must lead the way though human rights education. The U.S. must increase education on the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the history of the United Nations. This should be taught in our school classrooms as a part of each states curriculum to promote peace and tolerance at home and abroad.”

Hollywood Sentinel: There is a great quote in your book which I love that states, "Do you know that you were born as good as anyone else? Well you were. No one has the right to make you feel afraid or make you feel bad about yourself." What was the single most important thing that helped "you" get over your fear of others or of those that abused you?

Veera: Seeing my growing son, still afraid of his father when he was hitting him, killed the fear inside me and made me finally take the action that was so overdue. I finally decide to give up trying to beg him to stop abusing us instead I decide to "stop" accepting the abuse and I told him I was leaving him. That day I freed my sons and myself to live our lives the way we wanted to live and put and end to abuse.

Hollywood Sentinel: That's powerful Veera. You have stated that love is stronger thank hate. Please explain further why this is?

Veera Mahajan: It all starts with how much you love yourself. Since our childhood, we are taught to be nice to others and love others. Most of us are not taught or encouraged to love ourselves. Most of us never learned self care. Since the very beginning, we are made to feel bad about taking care of ourselves. We are told it is selfish if we think about our own happiness. So we learn to take care of other people and when we don’t get the care back, we start building resentment. We expect people we care about to care about us and when we don’t get it, we are disappointed and hate it. Hate makes us fight and be mean to each other. If we teach our children to love themselves, they will have better expectations from their relationships. We expect less than respect because we don’t love ourselves enough to believe that we deserve the best.

Hollywood Sentinel: That's so true, I love that. What is the best way to achieve and maintain a positive mental attitude?

Veera: A healthy mind, and a healthy body! Taking care of your physical health by regular workout's and maintaining healthy eating habits will make you feel better about yourself. Feeling good about yourself is very important for making sure you respect yourself in all aspects of your life, whether it is in business or personal situations. Taking care of your physical self lets you see the positive results. Once you learn that positive things happen with healthy habits, it teaches you to build a healthy and positive attitude towards everything else you do in life. So, I think to maintain a positive attitude; maintain a healthy body. It takes a positive self-image and positive mental attitude to maintain good physical health.

Dr. Rasha Kelej visited one of the villages in the Central Province to meet a group of Zambian infertile women to identify their needs and challenges and work on a concrete strategy to support and empower them and make their life happier. Also, to break the stigma of infertility through access to information, education and change of mindset using people’s natural settings such as art, fashion, films and social media to raise awareness.

Merck Foundation introduced new and unique initiatives in the country to get the desired culture shift.

“We have introduced few innovative initiatives such as the ‘Merck more than a Mother’ Fashion Award in partnership with First Lady of Zambia and Zambia Fashion Week. We have introduced this award to encourage to create a meaningful fashion trend aiming to break the stigma around infertility and educate our communities that ‘Fertility is a Shared Responsibility’, and not only women are responsible for it.

Also, we have called for application for ‘Merck More Than a Mother’ Media Recognition Award to recognize and appreciate professional journalists who have produced accurate, informative and compelling stories about infertility, infertile women or couples” emphasized Dr. Rasha Kelej.

Merck Foundation has also worked closely with local singers to create songs that address the sane issue to sensitize the community with the aim to break the stigma of infertility and empower infertile women.

Merck Foundation also conducted the first Media Health Training in the country in partnership with The First Lady of Zambia, Ministry of Health together with Zambia Union of Journalists. It was attended by over 50 Zambian journalists and was organized to train journalists on the international standards and media ethics for reporting sensitive issues like infertility in Africa. It benefited the journalists in understanding the infertility issues in African communities and to learn the best media practices to cover it with the aim to break its stigma and sensitize our communities through all media outlets.

Merck Foundation has started the partnership with Zambia Ministry of Health since 2016, through providing training for the first Fertility specialists in Zambia by providing clinical training on fertility specialty. Merck Foundation will continue to train more candidates to help infertile couples across the country.

Merck Foundation has provided training for the first Surgical, Pediatric and Gynecology, radiology and adult Oncologists in Zambia through one-year Merck Oncology Fellowship Program in India. Furthermore, Merck Foundation, in partnership with the First Lady of Zambia, will continue enrolling doctors from Zambia nationwide in the one year and two-year oncology fellowship program and master’s degree program in Tata Memorial Centre, University of Malaya and Cairo University respectively as a contribution to improve cancer care in the country.

Merck Foundation will start their Merck Foundation Blue Points project to help improve access to equitable and quality diabetes care across Zambia through providing one-year on-line diabetes diploma to 10 doctors, one from each province in Zambia. Every diploma graduate will be able to establish a diabetes clinic in his center or hospital with the aim to help their respective communities to better prevent and manage diabetes.

The World Council of the Cedars Revolution Condemns Hezbollah-Linked Officials in Venezuela
