Mobtown Massacre: Massachusetts legislator Josh Cutler's book tells story of nations first fatal newspaper attack

On July 27, 1812, muskets defended the free press

BALTIMORE, MD, USA, July 26, 2019 /EINPresswire.com/ — The History Press

When muskets defended the free press
Legislator Josh Cutler (D-MA)’s new book tells story of ‘Mobtown Massacre’ –– nation’s first fatal newspaper attack

HANSON, MA, DUXBURY, MA and BALTIMORE, MD…Massachusetts State Representative and former newspaper editor Josh Cutler of Duxbury, MA has published Mobtown Massacre, with all donations from the sale of the book to benefit the Baltimore City Historical Society (MD) and the Hanson Historical Society (MA).

His book notes that on July 27, 1812, the nation’s cherished notion of freedom of the press nearly succumbed to a rampaging mob led by a hot-tempered shoemaker and an eccentric doctor.

Long before the era of “fake news,” newspapers often had to be defended with pens and pistols. Mobtown Massacre tells the story of Alexander Hanson, a 19th century Federalist newspaper editor whose strident anti-war writings provoked a bloodthirsty mob, a midnight jailbreak and a brutal massacre that stunned the nation. A defiant Hanson refused to back down, even when his own life was in peril.

Two hundred years after his death, he remains a little known figure in American history, yet Hanson put his life on the line to defend the nation’s principle of freedom of the press in a way few have done before, or since.

Hanson later became of the youngest U.S. Senators in history, but he never fully recovered from the attack against his newspaper. Still he was luckier than General James Lingan, a veteran of the American Revolution who helped Hanson defend the newspaper and was killed in the two-day mob attack, becoming the first known American to die in defense of the free press.

Mobtown Massacre: Alexander Hanson and the Baltimore Newspaper War of 1812 is published by The History Press, an imprint of Arcadia Publishing. Author Josh S. Cutler is a Massachusetts state legislator and former newspaper editor who represents the town of Hanson, Mass. The book includes a foreword by Dr. Edward Papenfuse, a noted historian and retired Maryland State Archivist.

All royalties from the sale of the book are being donated to the Baltimore City Historical Society & the Hanson Historical Society. For more information visit mobtownmassacre.com.

Views of Mobtown Massacre
“A compelling story that’s as timely today as it was two centuries ago. —U.S. Congressman William R. Keating
“A remarkably vivid, engaging and very readable account of a brief but major event in Baltimore history … which reflected the sharp political divisiveness of the time at the start of the War of 1812, and had important implications for freedom of the press and the war itself.” —Charles Markell, board member, Baltimore City Historical Society
“Mobtown Massacre is a timely and scholarly examination of one man’s struggle for freedom of the press. Denied by word and brutal mob attacks, leaving deaths and injuries that defined a city and shaped a nation’s very notion of freedom of the press.” —Fred Dorsey, Howard County, MD historian
About the author
Josh S. Cutler is an attorney and state legislator representing the Sixth Plymouth District of Massachusetts, which includes the town of Hanson. Cutler is a graduate of Skidmore College (BA), Suffolk Law (JD) and the University of Massachusetts at Dartmouth (MPP in environmental policy). He is also the author of “When the Press Really Was Under Attack: Alexander Hanson and the 1812 ‘Mobtown’ Massacre,” published by the New England Journal of History (Spring 2018).

Israel Tennis Centers Foundation is now Israel Tennis & Education Centers Foundation – New Name. Same Mission.

The Israel Tennis & Education Centers Foundation is emphasizing the impact of their sport & education programs on over 500,000 children in Israel since 1976

We are so proud of our history, growth and evolution. It is simply amazing to see how education and empowerment has truly transformed lives and created pathways to a brighter future.”

— Jacqueline Glodstein, Executive Vice President of Global Development

NEW YORK, NEW YORK, USA, July 25, 2019 /EINPresswire.com/ — It was announced today that the Israel Tennis Centers has changed its name to the Israel Tennis and Education Centers.

The Israel Tennis & Education Centers is celebrating its extraordinary legacy that has taken them from 1 Center in 1976 to 14 and growing strong, while impacting over 500,000 youth in Israel.

Over the last 43 years the Israel Tennis & Education Centers (ITEC) have grown and evolved into one of the largest social service agencies for children in Israel. ITEC has transformed the lives of hundreds of thousands of vulnerable children, of all faiths, many living on or below the poverty level, by educating and empowering them through academic enrichment, sports and mentoring, igniting hope and opening pathways to a successful future for them and for Israel, now and for generations to come.

This remarkable not for profit organization truly embodies inclusion and unity in a region where that is very rare. ITEC has created a model of ethnic integration through sports in a safe environment where each and every child is afforded the opportunity to play, dream, learn and make friends within a peaceful community. Many see the centers within their communities as a stable, nurturing “second home” that supports them as they develop into productive, healthy, well-rounded adults, with thousands receiving scholarships to university and employment opportunities, as a result of their participation.

Its impact extends far beyond the children that participate in the programs, making an immeasurable positive impact on the country, the communities surrounding each center, the teachers, coaches and families of the over half a million children that have benefited from ITEC.

The organization is focused on the core values of education, equality, empowerment and well-being. Through its social impact programs, a wide range of children are served, including youth at risk, immigrants from Ethiopian and Russia and children with special needs, from autism and ADHD to Down Syndrome as well as those with developmental and physical disabilities.

The goal of Israel Tennis & Education Centers is to ensure that every child in Israel is healthy, educated, equal and equipped to pursue their dreams, without religious, economic or social barriers, and has the opportunity to reach their full potential.

"We are so proud of our history, growth and evolution. It is simply amazing to see how education and empowerment has truly transformed the lives of these children,” states Jacqueline Glodstein, Executive Vice President of Global Development. “We teach in an environment of diversity and inclusiveness as we believe, this will set them on the path to a brighter future, which they might otherwise not have envisioned.”

AMCD Calls Out Lebanese Ambassador to UN for Protecting Hezbollah

Lebanese Ambassador to the UN, Amal Mudallali

WASHINGTON, DC, USA, July 24, 2019 /EINPresswire.com/ — The American Mideast Coalition for Democracy called out the Lebanese Ambassador to the United Nations, Amal Mudallali, for protecting, and thus supporting, the terrorist organization Hezbollah in the Security Council.

On Tuesday, July 23rd, the Israeli Ambassador to the UN, Danny Danon, explained to the 15-member Security Council that Iran has been using Lebanon’s civilian port in Beirut to transport weapons to Hezbollah. “Israel found that Iran and the Quds Force have begun to advance the exploitation of the civilian maritime channels, and specifically the Port of Beirut. The Port of Beirut is now the Port of Hezbollah,” said Danon.

In response, the Lebanese Ambassador, Amal Mudallali, claimed Israel was issuing “direct threats on their [Lebanon’s] peace and civilian infrastructure. If it is using them [Danon’s accusations] to prepare the ground and the international community for an attack on Lebanon’s civilian ports and airport and its infrastructure – as they did in 2006 – this council should not stay silent,” she said.

“It’s a disgrace that Ambassador Mudallali would defend the Iranian terrorist organization before the UN Security Council,” said AMCD co-chair Tom Harb. “This makes her, and by extension the government of Lebanon, an accomplice to terror.”

“Weapons smuggling is a dirty business,” stated AMCD co-chair John Hajjar. “The ambassador is clearly attempting to shield one of the world’s worst terrorist organizations as they receive weapons directly from Iran, the world’s foremost state sponsor of terror. Furthermore, she is attempting to accuse Israel of having suspect motives for simply reporting these facts to the UN.”

On July 9th, Representative Michael McCaul (R-Texas) stated that Hezbollah is actively endangering the Lebanese population by hiding 100.000 rockets pointed at Israel in Lebanese homes and schools. He also expressed concern that the Lebanese Army not only does nothing about the staging of these rockets in civilian areas, but that at least some of the money given by the US government to the Lebanese Army ends up trickling down to Hezbollah.

AMCD will continue to stand firmly against any “normalization” of this vicious terrorist organization as it continues to sow fear, mayhem and death wherever its tentacles extend.

Kelly Hyman examines fight for equal pay in USA women's soccer

Kelly Hyman Attorney

Actress turned legal analyst and attorney Kelly Hyman explores the ongoing fight of the United States women's national soccer team for equal pay.

DENVER, CO, UNITED STATES, July 24, 2019 /EINPresswire.com/ — This year has seen the United States women's national soccer team scoop its fourth FIFA World Cup final win. Despite this, America's professional women soccer players continue to face unequal pay, according to Kelly Hyman. An attorney with Franklin D. Azar & Associates in Denver, Colorado, the actress turned lawyer and legal analyst examines the ongoing fight for equal pay in women's soccer.

"The USA women's soccer team won its fourth FIFA World Cup championship in 2019," explains Hyman, "yet they still face the challenge of fighting for equal pay."

While some have argued that men's sports are more popular and thus more lucrative, this year, the women's USA soccer team drew a larger television audience than their male counterparts attracted during the previous year, according to Hyman. Key points, she says, surrounding the issue of equal pay for this year's women champions center primarily on performance and revenue.

"The women's FIFA World Cup finals have been held every four years since the first championship in 1991," Hyman reveals. Incredibly, of the eight championships to date, the United States women's national soccer team has triumphed in half of all the finals held, making it the most victorious team in the league. "America's women soccer champions are setting records," says Hyman, "something which isn't going unnoticed."

Indeed, as the United States, women's national soccer team attracted a record-breaking crowd for the FIFA World Cup final this year, the near-60,000 capacity host stadium began to chant for fair pay. "'Equal pay! Equal pay! Equal pay!' erupted from the crowd," adds Hyman.

Earlier this year, in March, 28 women, each of whom has played on the United States women's national soccer team, filed a gender discrimination lawsuit against the U.S. Soccer Federation. "The suit accuses the organization of not providing the same standard of working conditions or pay," Hyman explains, "when compared with the men's soccer league."

"The women, however," she continues, "have completely outperformed the men, with the men's team not even qualifying for the latest FIFA World Cup, for example."

Kelly Hyman also explains how the women's team is attracting a much larger television audience. "The women's event attracted over 14 million American television viewers this year," the attorney points out, "whereas the men's championship last year drew only around 11 million, according to Nielsen figures."

This is further reflected in in-game revenue. "From 2016 to 2018, the women's games generated $50.8 million in revenue compared to the men's games bringing in $49.9 million," points out Hyman. The women players suing the U.S. Soccer Federation, therefore, have numerous highly valid points working in their favor as they dominate men both in terms of TV ratings and revenue, as well as championship performance. "Still," she adds, "they continue to be paid far less."

A recent report by The New York Times revealed that the prize money for the 2019 women's FIFA World Cup was $30 million. This, says attorney Kelly Hyman, pales in comparison to the $400 million paid to the men the previous year. "Congress, however, is beginning to look into the matter," adds the seasoned legal analyst.

A letter from 50 congress members to the president of the U.S. Soccer Federation has allegedly asked why women are paid so much less than men. "The letter stated that women players make around $30,000 less than male players," explains Kelly Hyman, "while men also get almost 40 percent more in bonuses."

"It's hoped, therefore, that the matter will not only bring more attention to the issue of equal pay across the board," she adds, wrapping up, "but also more attention to the sport of women's soccer, helping further boost the salaries of women players."

WASHINGTON, DC, USA, July 24, 2019 /EINPresswire.com/ — Human rights violations are the main causes of conflict and insecurity in the world which, in turn, invariably lead to new human rights violations. The importance given to human rights and their protection is monumental. As a reminder that they must not be neglected, the United Nations General Assembly proclaimed the day of December 10th as Human Rights Day to bring people's attention to the first universal document that stated that all human beings have certain inherent rights that are inalienable – the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

Promoting education and awareness on the Universal Declaration of Human Rights is essential. This derives even from the preamble of the Declaration that exhorts "every individual and every organ of society" to "strive by teaching and education to promote respect for these rights and freedoms."

This July, Youth for Human Rights International organized at their national office in Washington, DC, a free, four-hour human rights training on the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. The training, led by Ms. Isabelle Vladoiu, Director of United for Human Rights Washington, DC, and international specialist on human rights law, covered each of the 30 human rights enshrined in the Declaration. More than 90 human rights advocates and heads of international organizations from four different continents representing countries such as Nigeria, Kenya, Nicaragua, Iraq, India and Pakistan traveled to the nation’s capital to attend the training.

“It is fundamental to understand the important role the 30 rights in the UDHR play in creating a sane, nonviolent and prosperous community,” said Ms. Vladoiu. “Human rights are based on the principle of respect for the individual. It teaches you that your rights end where the rights of others begin.”

Raising awareness of human rights can have also a tremendous impact on pressing human rights issues such as bullying and human trafficking.

For example:
• According to the Polaris Project, a non-profit that works to combat and prevent modern-day slavery and human trafficking, in 2016, there were 8,042 cases of human trafficking reported to hotlines, including 7,572 cases to the National Human Trafficking Hotline from within the U.S., 301 reported cases from overseas, and 169 cases reported to the BeFree Textline. This number compares to 5,961 reported cases in 2015. Polaris largely attributes this increase to greater awareness of human trafficking.
• According to stopbullying.gov, 70.6 percent of young people in America say they have seen bullying in their schools. However, when bystanders intervene, bullying stops within 10 seconds 57 percent of the time.

Participants were shown the 30 one-minute Youth for Human Rights public service announcements to help them grasp the core concepts of each of the 30 articles of Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Using the Youth for Human Rights Educator’s Guide, the training instructor had the group discuss their own examples of the importance of these rights and the consequences of their violation. On completing the training, participants were awarded a certificate of completion certifying their knowledge on the basic human rights that we all have.

About Youth for Human Rights:

Youth for Human Rights International, a non-profit organization committed to educating people worldwide on their human rights and accompanying responsibilities through the United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights, assisting and enabling young people to become leaders, advocating for tolerance and peace. While many other global human rights organizations focus on raising concerns about human rights violations, advancing research and advocating on behalf of the victims of abuse, Youth for Human Rights International complements this work by addressing those issues with educational materials and activities. At the core of its campaign are the informational “What Are Human Rights?” booklets, introducing youth and adults to the 30 rights in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, illustrated in simple and clear language. They are provided free of charge to millions of people annually and made available in 27 languages at https://www.youthforhumanrights.org/request-info/free-portfolio.html

We felt it was important to highlight that a traumatic brain injury does not just affect the lives of the individuals who were injured, it impacts their whole family.”

PLEASANTVILLE, NEW YORK, UNITED STATES, July 24, 2019 /EINPresswire.com/ — A new video from New York brain injury attorneys De Caro & Kaplen, LLP, highlights how brain injury impacts spouses and loved ones of the millions of Americans who have experienced a traumatic brain injury.

The new video, titled ‘Living With A Stranger’, follows the “overwhelmingly positive” response to ‘The Invisible Rain Cloud’, an animated video released by the firm in January 2019, which described how it feels to live with a brain injury.

Shana De Caro, a senior partner in the firm, who is currently serving her second term as secretary of the Brain Injury Association of America, explains why they felt it was important to release a follow-up video:

“Earlier this year we received an overwhelmingly positive response to ‘The Invisible Rain Cloud’, which attempts to explain how it feels to live day-to-day with a traumatic brain injury. One of the main themes of the video was how brain injury survivors may experience huge changes in personality, making them feel, and act, like different people altogether. For a spouse, these changes can be extremely difficult to cope with.”

Shana continued, “In addition to the huge emotional trauma of seeing their loved one injured, many wives and husbands must adapt to suddenly becoming caretakers for their partners, while also coming to terms with the (often startling) changes in their personality. In some cases it really can feel like being married to a different person. We felt it was important to highlight that a traumatic brain injury does not just affect the lives of the individuals who were injured, it impacts their whole family.”

According to recent CDC figures, 5.3 million Americans currently live with a Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) related disability. Michael V. Kaplen, a partner in the firm, who chairs the New York State Traumatic Brain Injury Services Coordinating Council and is a former President of the Brain Injury Association of New York, believes the impact of traumatic brain injury on spouses and loved ones is often overlooked, “The impact on the spouse, family, and loved ones of someone who has sustained a brain injury are often neglected and overlooked. Their needs must be examined and addressed.”

According to the firm, ‘The Invisible Rain Cloud’ has now been viewed over 100,000 times on their website, YouTube, and social media channels, and they have received feedback from many brain injury survivors that the video has helped them explain their injury and experiences to others. Kaplen sets out his hope that ‘Living With A Stranger’ will similarly help the spouses of brain injury survivors, “Spouses and people close to brain injury victims may feel overwhelmed and find it difficult to explain their emotional roller coaster. We hope that ‘Living With A Stranger’ will assist in communicating the difficulties they themselves face.”

Kaplen concludes by encouraging the spouses of brain injury survivors to seek help, “Tragically many relationships do not survive the enormous challenges of adapting to life after brain injury, and separations are all too common. We encourage families to seek the help and support that is available to them at this time, and we would also encourage the government to do more to assist brain injury survivors and their families in the future.”
