BRINGENBRONG, VIC, AUSTRALIA, August 23, 2019 /EINPresswire.com/ — A solo, three month, 2400km kayak expedition. One man's epic journey to reach people with depression.

Departing August 24th 2019, Marc Nieuwenhuys will be attempting to solo Kayak Australia’s longest river, (the Murray River) unassisted and with no support crew.

Raising awareness for depression & encouraging people to ‘start talking’, Marc will paddle 2400km’s through three states and over 37 towns. Over an estimated three months and more than 2.5 million paddle strokes, Marc hopes to inspire others to start talking about their depression.

Earlier this year Marc was kayaking a stretch of the Murray River when he realised it was time to change his life. After a long battle with depression the river resonated deeply with Marc and he made the decision to attempt the solo kayak journey. The expedition has given him the courage to stand up and talk openly and honestly about his battle with depression.

Talking about his mental health and sharing with others the details of his expedition, Marc soon realised that it was having a profound impact on others. His story was encouraging others to also start talking about their depression. One person has said “Marc’s story is giving permission for others to talk about their own mental health battle”. Marc’s expedition is now more than a journey for just himself, he wants to reach as many people as possible with the message that we need to start talking.

‘Talking About A Lonely Journey’ is the title to Marc’s up and coming book. It is also the title to his expedition. For Marc, depression has been a lonely journey, he writes a candid and emotional account of the daily battles one with depression faces. He will be writing and recording the physical and mental challenges he will face on this huge expedition.

A journey of this magnitude needs support and Marc’s story resonates deeply with many. Sponsors were quick to jump on board and include Kathmandu, Werner Paddles & Goal Zero. Local design company Formswell have taken care of all visual media whilst Rohan Thomson and Ashley St George from Pew Pew Studio Canberra have produced stunning images.

Attached is an introduction to Marc, details of his expedition and an excerpt from his book.

Marc lives in Canberra and is full time training and preparing for his upcoming expedition.
He is available for interviews and comments at the below contact details.

What is the position of the Transnational Government of Tamil Eelam in Sri Lanka's Presidential Poll?

Gothabaya Rajapakse

NEW YORK, UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, August 22, 2019 /EINPresswire.com/ —

'The Transnational Government of Tamil Eelam (TGTE) is not viewing the Presidential nominee, Gotabaya Rajapaksa, as the only perpetrator of the crime of Genocide. We see the the entire Sri Lankan State and all who ruled as the face of that State as being complicit in the crime of Genocide' said the TGTE.

The TGTE's Ministry of Political Affairs was responding to the question about their position with regards to the Presidential polls, at this time when election fever have taken center stage in the island.

The Presidential Election in Sri Lanka has always been one serving the needs of the Sinhala Nation, while it was being thrust upon an occupied Tamil Nation. 'It is from this perspective that we have been approaching every election held in Sri Lanka, with the ambition of winning back the sovereignty of the Tamil Nation'.

'Rather than being trapped in the immediacy of concessional politics, our position has always been compatible with decisions aimed at the long-term goals benefitting the Tamil Liberation struggle'.

TGTE's Ministry of Political Affairs went on to say that the final position on this matter was 'for our Parliament to deliberate and decide on at the appropriate time'.

Animal Wellness Applauds Connecticut Congressional Delegation for Working to Protect Iconic American Horses

World Grand Champion Tennessee Walking Horse performing the "Big Lick"

Priscilla Presley, U.S. House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer (D-MD), Holly Gann, and Marty Irby on Capitol Hill Discussing the PAST Act

Soring

Example of soring that enforcement of the Horse Protection Act would prevent

Devices the PAST Act would outlaw

The Senate should follow our lead, and take a vote to end the practice of horse soring.”

— Rep. Joe Courtney (D-CT-02)

HARTFORD, CONNECTICUT , USA, August 22, 2019 /EINPresswire.com/ — The U.S. House of Representatives recently passed the Prevent All Soring Tactics (PAST) Act, H.R. 693, by a vote of 333 to 96. The entire Connecticut Delegation, Reps. John Larson, Joe Courtney, Rosa DeLauro, James Himes, and Jahanna Hayes, were all cosponsors of the measure and voted in support of the bill.

The PAST Act seeks to strengthen the Horse Protection Act and end the torturous, painful practice of soring Tennessee Walking, Racking, and Spotted Saddle Horses. Soring, the intentional infliction of pain to horses' front limbs by applying caustic chemicals such as mustard oil or kerosene or inserting sharp objects into the horses' hooves to create an exaggerated gait known as the "Big Lick,” has plagued the equine world for six decades. The "Big Lick" animal cruelty will be on display beginning tonight at The Tennessee Walking Horse National Celebration in Shelbyville, Tennessee.

U.S. Senators Richard Blumenthal, and Chris Murphy are both cosponsors of the Senate companion bill, S. 1007, led by the senior U.S. Senator from Idaho, Mike Crapo, that mirrors the House passed legislation.

“I’m glad to join such a broad and bipartisan group of my colleagues in voting to pass the PAST Act,” said Rep. Joe Courtney (D-CT-02). “This year’s bill had over 300 co-sponsors from both sides of the aisle, which should send a strong message that Congress, and the American people are fed up with the cruelty of horse soring. There’s no justifiable reason to force an animal to endure the excruciating pain of soring tactics, especially when that reason, in this case, is to simply win a trophy. The Senate should follow our lead, and take a vote to end the practice of horse soring.”

“We applaud the Members of Congress from Connecticut for their unanimous support of the PAST Act, and thank them for their key role in passing this legislation that will bring an end to six decades of horse abuse,” said Marty Irby, executive director at Animal Wellness Action, and a past president of the Tennessee Walking Horse Breeders’ & Exhibitors’ Association. "The overwhelming national support of the PAST Act should send a strong message to the Senate that it should saddle up and end this cruelty for good."

“Timing is ripe, and the majority of Americans want to see Congress work to protect these iconic American horses upon whose backs our country was built upon,” said Animal Wellness Advocate Priscilla Presley. “U.S. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell should swiftly schedule a vote on the PAST Act, and execute the will of the American people, and I call on him to do so!”

The PAST Act would ban the use of painful large stacked shoes and ankle chains and would also eliminate the existing system of self-regulation by the industry and toughen penalties for violators of the Horse Protection Act. It’s supported by the American Quarter Horse Association, Animal Wellness Action, the American Horse Council, American Veterinary Medical Association, American Association of Equine Practitioners, United States Equestrian Federation, National Sheriff’s Association, and Connecticut Veterinary Medical Association.

The PAST Act has been blocked for years by a handful of well-placed lawmakers, but a new House rule triggering consideration of any measure that attracts 290 or more cosponsors brought the issue to the floor. PAST attracted 308 cosponsors, and was led by U.S. Reps. Kurt Schrader (D-OR) and Ted Yoho (R-FL), cochairs of the Congressional Veterinary Medicine Caucus, along with Reps. Steve Cohen (D-TN), Ron Estes (R-KS), Jan Schakowsky (D-IL), and Chris Collins (R-NY). The Senate companion has garnered 43 cosponsors.

ABOUT NATIONAL COUNCIL OF NEGRO WOMEN

The National Council of Negro Women (NCNW) is a nonprofit organization founded in 1935 with the mission to advance the opportunities and the quality of life for African American women, their families, and communities. Mary McLeod Bethune was the founder of NCNW and wanted to encourage the participation of Negro Women in civic, political, economic and educational activities and institutions. NCNW serves as a super organization which acts as a cohesive umbrella for the other African American groups that already existed. With its 28 national affiliate organizations and its more than 200 community-based sections, NCNW has an outreach to nearly four million women, all contributing to the peaceful solutions to the problems of human welfare and rights. ICAN Spearheads City of Beverly Hills Unanimous Condemnation of California Ethnic Studies Curriculum

I was touched by the great support we received from the Beverly Hills City Council tonight. Together our voices will be heard.”

— ICAN Chairwoman, Vered Elkouby Nisim

BEVERLY HILLS , CALIFORNIA , USA, August 21, 2019 /EINPresswire.com/ — The Israeli-American Civic Action Network (ICAN) welcomed the decision of the Beverly Hills City Council to unanimously condemn the State of California's proposed ethnic studies model curriculum after many officials, educators, parents, and students found the curriculum to be both anti-Semitic and anti-Israel. The council also urged government appointees involved in the crafting of the ethnic studies model curriculum to be recalled or otherwise removed from their positions.

The Mayor, John Mirisch, and Beverly Hills City Council took action following the submission of an ICAN report detailing the anti-Semitic and anti-Israel nature of the ethnic studies model curriculum. The effort, led by ICAN's California Chairwoman, Vered Elkouby Nisim, drew concerned parents and students from schools and communities across Los Angeles.

"I am a proud Israeli-American. My father is Moroccan, and he left Morocco as a child to live on a kibbutz in Israel, the one country where he knew he would be safe as a Jew. Israel is the one Jewish state we have. While California is today our home, Israel is our heritage," said Chairwoman Nisim. "The current draft of the model curriculum teaches students to hate my family's heritage, that is not acceptable. I was touched by the great support we received from the Beverly Hills City Council tonight, and together, our voices will be heard."

Councilmember Julian Gold stated, "We should take the strongest possible stance against this curriculum. This thing has to go back to the beginning, and we should start a campaign to recall the members of the commission involved in creating this mess."

Mayor Mirisch added, "the City of Beverly Hills called upon the State to investigate and root out the cause of this anti-Israel bias before the next iteration," of the curriculum is released.

Councilmember Lili Bosse said, "after losing most of my family to Jewish hate and anti-Semitic propaganda in World War Two, I was taught three lessons as a child, one, never give up, two, never again, and three, never forget. It is our duty to stop this now. Recall anyone who is spewing this hatred."

ICAN joins the Beverly Hills City Council in its call for the removal of all appointees and the recall of any officials involved in drafting the anti-semitic and anti-Israel content found in the current version of the proposed ethnic studies model curriculum.

"We'll be in Sacramento working to determine what happened with this curriculum," said Dillon Hosier, ICAN's Chief Advocacy Officer. "And, we agree with the Beverly Hills City Council that those who developed this version of the curriculum should not be involved in the revision process moving forward. We will do our best to make sure those changes in appointees or officials happen."

Mental Health Watchdog states that the sexual assault of patients in psychiatric facilities and offices is a despicable but all too common occurrence.

CCHR has documented systemic patient sexual abuse in for-profit psychiatric hospitals including 21 incidents of patients being sexually assaulted in one chain of behavioral facilities.”

— Citizens Commission on Human Rights

CLEARWATER, FLORIDA, UNITED STATES, August 20, 2019 /EINPresswire.com/ — In a ground-breaking decision on August 12 2019, a Ventura, California jury awarded $13.25 million to three women who were sexually assaulted by a staff member at the for-profit psychiatric facility, Aurora Vista del Mar Hospital in Ventura. The facility was sued, along with its parent company Signature Healthcare Services, for employing someone who had previously been convicted of statutory rape. The staff member was also convicted of sex crimes related to the three Vista patients, including rape of an incompetent person. The jury found Signature, which owns 15 other hospitals in six states, including Florida, acted with malice or oppression and, bore part of the responsibility in not taking action to prevent the harm. [1]

The mental health watchdog, Citizens Commission on Human Rights (CCHR) says the sexual assault of vulnerable patients in psychiatric-behavioral facilities and offices is a despicable but all too common occurrence. It’s a jarring reality that 7-10 percent of male psychiatrists and psychologists sexually abuse their patients, the group says. [2] It begs the question, as The Boston Globe once posed, “Why is psychiatry such a hotbed of sexual misconduct?” [3] The sexual crimes committed by psychiatrists are estimated at 37 times greater than rapes occurring in the general community, one U.S. law firm stated, estimating that about 150,000 female patients have been assaulted. [4]

Of 18 psychiatrists, psychologists and counselors convicted of crimes so far this year, 12 were for sexual crimes against patients, including sexual battery and child molestation. In many cases, their names will be added to the sexual offender register. Other convictions relate to illegal or dangerous prescribing of controlled substances and fraud.

In one case, a behavioral therapist was found guilty of second-degree rape, second-degree sodomy and six counts of first-degree sexual abuse of a 13-year-old autistic boy. The therapist was sentenced to 8 1/3 years in prison. [5] Combined, the mental health therapists face over 100 years in prison. An additional 21 mental health practitioners—two in Florida—have been charged this year.

CCHR says this culture of abuse is rife. In recent years CCHR has documented systemic patient sexual abuse in for-profit psychiatric-behavioral hospitals, including 21 incidents of patients, including children, being sexually assaulted in one chain of behavioral facilities.

• Two hospital staff were convicted and jailed for a combined 35 years over the sexual abuse of residents and two facilities closed down in the wake of sexual abuse incidents and other allegations. [6]
• A hospital staff member pleaded guilty to sexual abuse and was placed on the state’s convicted sex offender registry. [7]
• A mental health technician was sentenced to 25 years in prison for sexually abusing six girls at a Girls Juvenile Residential Facility in Florida. [8]

According to a U.S. national survey of therapist-client sex involving minors, one out of 20 clients who had been sexually abused by their therapist was a minor, the average age being 7 for girls and 12 for boys. The youngest child was three. [9]

This year, justice officials in court proceedings commented on the “position of trust” that mental health “professionals” violate when sexually abusing patients. In one case a State Attorney General also described the psychiatrist as using “his position of power and authority to rape and demean our victim. His predatory acts deserve nothing less than the maximum sentence. It is my sincere hope that the defendant will spend the rest of his life behind bars so he is not allowed to hurt anyone again.” [10]

Furthermore, those therapists who report having sex with their patients are often repeat offenders with some surveys noting over 50 percent of male therapists report sexual involvement with more than one patient. [11] A Canadian study put the repeat offenders at 80 percent and many had undergone personal analysis or psychotherapy in an unsuccessful effort to be rehabilitated. [12]

CCHR says that such treachery often occurs when the victim is already traumatized. One report by the Victorian Mental Illness Awareness Council in Australia revealed that 70 percent of women who end up in psychiatric hospitals have been victims of some form of sexual abuse. [13]

CCHR has successfully worked to obtain laws that ensure psychiatrists, psychologists, psychotherapists and behavioral counselors are not above the law. Today, there are 32 criminal statutes in the U.S. that protect patients from therapist sexual assault. But CCHR International wants to see stronger penalties. The level of abuse also begs the question how such “well-trained” psychiatrists and psychologists, who know better than to sexually abuse patients, believe they have the license to violate this. It wants medical schools and colleges that may have taught such conduct, to equally share in the burden of legal responsibility.

CCHR encourages anyone who has knowledge of a psychiatrist, psychologist or psychotherapist sexually abusing patients to please report this in confidence to CCHR: https://www.cchrint-programs.org/acms/case/create. For more information visit www.cchrflorida.org or call 727-442-8820.

About CCHR: Initially established by the Church of Scientology and renowned psychiatrist Dr. Thomas Szasz in 1969, CCHR’s mission is to eradicate abuses committed under the guise of mental health and enact patient and consumer protections. L. Ron Hubbard, founder of Scientology, first brought psychiatric imprisonment to wide public notice: “Thousands and thousands are seized without process of law, every week, over the ‘free world’ tortured, castrated, killed. All in the name of ‘mental health,’” he wrote in March 1969.

Sri Lanka’s Appointment of a War Criminal as Military Commander Reiterates the Urgency to Refer Sri Lanka to ICC: TGTE

Tamils Killed by Sri Lankan Forces

Appointment of Silva not only signals a likely death for the peace and justice process, but also further increases the very real threat to the lives of Tamils

This appointment is a staggering affront to international community, especially the United Nations Human Rights Council, which worked with Sri Lanka in good faith for years to make peace a reality

— Transnational Government of Tamil Eelam (TGTE)

NEW YORK, UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, August 20, 2019 /EINPresswire.com/ —

The appointment of Major General Shavendra Silva as the Sri Lankan Army’s new Military Commander – a man named by several UN reports as a war criminal for his role in the massacre and disappearance of tens of thousands of Tamils during Sri Lanka’s conflict – reiterates the urgency to refer Sri Lanka to the International Criminal Court (ICC), said Transnational Government of Tamil Eelam (TGTE).

“Major General Silva’s appointment confirms that the only way to get justice for the mass killings of Tamils by Sri Lankan Army troops under General Silva’s command is through either the International Criminal Court (ICC) or through an International Criminal Tribunal on Sri Lanka established by the UN”

"UN reports detailed what ensued in May 2009 at the hands of Major General Silva’s 58th Division of the Sri Lankan Army as war crimes and crimes against humanity, including the mass killing of over seventy thousand Tamils in six months, forced disappearances, extrajudicial executions, rape, the calculated denial of food and humanitarian aid designed to bring about death, the deliberate shelling of hospitals and displacement camps, and torture"

“Major General Silva played one of the most significant roles in perpetuating the Tamil Genocide,” Said TGTE.

“This appointment is a staggering affront to the international community, especially the United Nations Human Rights Council, which worked with Sri Lanka exhaustively and in good faith for years to devise a plan of action to make peace, reconciliation, and accountability in Sri Lanka a reality. Instead, both have been served a platter of betrayal.”

Major General Silva was named in a war crimes lawsuit in New York in 2011, dismissed on the grounds of diplomatic immunity. In 2012, Major General Silva was also removed from a UN peacekeeping committee because of these allegations.

“The appointment of Major General Silva not only signals a likely death for the peace, and justice process, but it also further increases the very real threat to the lives of Tamils,” sais TGTE.
