UN Experts Blast US Pressure on Cuba as 'Colonial-Era' Coercion

(MENAFN) United Nations human rights experts sounded the alarm Tuesday over what they characterized as a dangerous and escalating campaign of threats and coercive measures by Washington against Cuba, cautioning that the conduct strikes at the foundations of international law.

In a formal statement, the experts declared that attempts to alter the constitutional order of a sovereign nation through intimidation and pressure "echo colonial-era practices" — a pointed condemnation of tactics they say have no place in the modern multilateral framework.

The panel singled out US President Donald Trump's proclamation of the so-called "Donroe Doctrine" in March, along with public remarks referencing the "honor of taking Cuba," as indicators of a deliberate and coordinated strategy to destabilize the island nation.

Experts stressed the pressure is not merely rhetorical. They linked it to a web of longstanding punitive measures, including Washington's decades-old economic embargo, Cuba's designation as a state sponsor of terrorism, a recent fuel blockade and restrictions targeting third parties that engage with Havana.

The group also took direct aim at Washington's recent indictment of former Cuban President Raul Castro, arguing that deploying domestic courts against sitting or former heads of state as an instrument of foreign policy runs afoul of the sovereign equality and self-determination principles enshrined in the UN Charter.

Further alarm was raised over the announced deployment of the USS Nimitz aircraft carrier to the southern Caribbean, which the experts characterized as yet another element of unlawful coercion in an already volatile situation.

"These actions are part of a disturbing trend of lawlessness and contempt of multilateralism and the UN Charter," they said.

The experts closed with a direct appeal to Washington to halt all threats against Cuban sovereignty, while urging UN member states and UN bodies to defend the international legal order and treat the matter as a threat to international peace and security.
