Hundreds Protest Israeli Cruise Ship Arrival at Port Near Athens

(MENAFN) Hundreds of pro-Palestinian demonstrators converged on Greece's main port Wednesday to protest the arrival of an Israeli cruise ship, in a show of solidarity organized by some of the country's most prominent trade unions and human rights organizations.

The protesters descended on the Port of Piraeus — part of the greater Athens metropolitan area — where the Iris Crown had docked, waving Palestinian flags and hoisting banners condemning what they described as Israeli genocide in Gaza and expressing solidarity with the Palestinian people.

"We stand with the common feeling of horror and condemnation of the ongoing genocide and ethnic cleansing that has been intensively implemented by the Israeli state in Gaza since October 2023," a statement by the organizing committee said.

Demonstrators also directed demands at the governments of Greece and the Greek Cypriot Administration, urging both to immediately sever all forms of cooperation with and facilitation of Israel.

"Israeli soldiers are not welcome in the country. We should have nothing to do with genocidaires. And we must underline this, explain it to our fellow citizens, and impose it on the (Greek) government," they said.

Wednesday's protest was not the first time the vessel has drawn public opposition on Greek soil. Last summer, port calls by the same ship — then referred to as the Crown Iris — to multiple Greek destinations including the islands of Syros and Rhodes, Crete's port of Agios Nicholas, and the city of Volos, were met with near-identical demonstrations.
